An explosion suppression system is a safety device designed to detect and chemically suppress an explosion in its earliest stages. These explosion suppression systems are used in industrial applications where dust explosions are a risk. Most explosion suppression systems have three key components: a control panel, a pressure detector, and the explosion suppressor(s). Here at Safety Systems Inc., we provide sales, installation, and maintenance services for explosion suppression systems from our partners Fike Corp, IEP Technologies, CV Technology, and BS&B. These systems are designed to detect and respond to explosions in less than 1 millisecond, averting a catastrophe in your facility!
How Explosion Suppression Systems Work
As mentioned above, explosion suppression systems are made up of three components: the control panel, the pressure detector, and the suppressor. When an explosion occurs, the suppression sequence begins when the pressure detector senses the pressure wave that travels ahead of the explosion. When the preset pressure level is exceeded, the rupture disc on the suppressor bottle is opened, releasing pressurized nitrogen into the vessel. The nitrogen in the suppressor(s) is pressurized to 900 PSI, allowing it to fill the vessel’s entire cavity and extinguish the advancing explosion. Many explosion suppression systems are designed to detect and chemically suppress up to Class ST III dust explosion hazards!
When paired with an explosion isolation system, the pressure detector will also activate the gas cartridge actuator and drive the piston on the isolation valve, closing the slide gate to provide mechanical isolation within the vessel. Mechanical isolation & suppression systems work in unison to prevent explosion propagation through a facility’s ductwork, saving lives and property from explosion damage!
